Charity Profile: Horse Feathers Equine Rescue

Horse Feathers Equine Rescue provides shelter and assistance for horses in need throughout the state of Oklahoma. In addition to the loving care it provides for neglected, abused and unwanted horses at its facility in Guthrie, Horse Feathers coordinates programs that assist horse owners in need with essentials such as blankets and hay to help them through the hard winter months.
As the state’s only Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries-Verified horse rescue, Horse Feathers has been recognized for its excellence in equine sanctuary management and humane care of animals. GFAS sanctuaries have the highest credibility with donors, the media, and members of the public. This means that a donation is quickly put to use, covering essential expenses for the immediate veterinary, food and shelter needs of the horses in our care.
Our shelter is run exclusively by volunteers who donate long hours to the hard work of caring for these animals. We hope to find loving new homes for some of our horses, while many others are in “sanctuary” status, meaning that they’ll stay with us for life.
We have quite a range of animals at Horse Feathers, pedigreed Thoroughbreds to donkeys and just about everything in between. The one thing they have in common is that without the generosity of our volunteers, our sponsors, and generous supporters like you, their life’s stories would, by now, have come to sad ends.
Instead, these animals are cared for (and loved) by competent volunteers. This Saturday at Deluxe, we’ll give you more than just a chance to learn more about our operation and the wonderful animals in our care. We’ll give you the opportunity to give a very special Christmas gift to that little girl (or guy) who has everything—a gift neither you nor your child will never forget. Curious? Come visit us at Deluxe!

Where did you learn this art or craft?
I am self taught for the most part….I guess you can say I was taught by the woodland and open pasture aspect of Oklahoma…& I am not even being fanciful…that or the morning taught me… you would have to ask them yourself though if you really wanted to know:)

What inspires you?
The Morning, wood grain, baking pies, cottages in the middle of the woods, wood smoke, jars of honey and Gnomes:)

How do customers respond to your work?
I am hummbled when a customer says “Oh my gosh..I want to live in your photo”… Really, I get a lot of smiles…eyes become slightly wider and people see a little more of what home looks like:) I am honored to have those individuals who have made a Sam Lamb capture the center of their living room or capture…it blows me away that I can capture what makes me happy, & actually make other people just as happy:)

Featured Charity: Hounds of the Heartland

Hounds of the Heartland is a non-profit humane organization that finds loving, responsible homes for retired racing greyhounds and for young greyhounds not placed on the racetrack.

Our organization is run completely by volunteers who transport dogs from kennels, greyhound farms, and animal shelters; foster them in the Oklahoma City area; and do adoption outreach at petstores and events to increase the public’s awareness of what excellent, loving pets these noble dogs make.

Greyhounds are generally sweet, even-tempered dogs that love their humans and aim to please. They rarely bark, don’t shed a lot, and are notorious couch potatoes. Their laid-back demeanor means they are great family pets, apartment dogs, companions for the eldery, or mellow friends for working adults.

Missy, adopted 2011, outraces a mule

We’ll be selling raffle tickets for great prizes near the front entrace at Deluxe. The money raised at Deluxe all goes to support our foster greyhounds in the form of veterinary costs, food, medicine, and supplies. We usually have between 6-10 greyhounds available for adoption at any given time. There are always more greyhounds waiting for our foster spots, so if you are interested in adding a greyhound to your family we encourage you to read more about the breed and fill out an application. We hope you make time to stop by at Deluxe and meet your new best friend!

Charley, currently available for adoption

HOH is on Twitter, Facebook, Google+ and Instragram, in addition to our official website and blog.

Fabulous handmade clutches…aka “handbags from the heart”

Where did you learn this art or craft?
It’s a continual learning process, but I started out learning to sew from my Mom as a youngster. Later, I decided to pursue a career in the fashion industry, so I honed my skills while getting my Masters in Fashion Design at Oklahoma State.

What inspires you?
Everything! It’s exhausting!
But really, I’m inspired by a million random things every day. Art, design, words, images, and mostly the constant support and love of friends and family.

How do customers respond to your work?
So far people have responded pretty positively! Keeps me going!
I’m striving to create new product and continually update the line to keep customers interested and pleased.

Are you introducing any new products at Deluxe?
Yes, this year I’ll have some sweet little felt birds for sale. Great as ornaments on the Christmas tree, or for year-round decoration!

How would you describe your previous experience(s) at Deluxe?
Last year was my first time with Deluxe, and it was great! Customers responded really well to my clutches and I was honored by all the compliments and sales!
It is pretty crazy trying to prepare for the show, but well worth it!

What other artists are you looking forward to shopping from at Deluxe?
My best buddy Taryn from The Bungalow Studio (beautiful pillows and items for the home). And I always love Samantha Lamb’s work – she is an inspiration for sure!
I’ve been so busy sewing and preparing that I haven’t had time to peruse the list of other artists, so I’m really excited to check it all out!

Anything else you’d like shoppers to know?
Deluxe is a great time! Please come and enjoy! And remember, everything being sold at this show has been hand-crafted or created with love and care.
Ask questions if you have any…and even if you can’t buy, compliments are always appreciated!

Purses and accessories using fun modern fabrics mixed with vintage trims.

Where did you learn this art or craft?
I remember watching my mother and grandmother sew when I was little. Other then the learning the basics in high school Home Economics, I taught myself. A lot of trial and error, and a lot of ripping out stitches. I started sewing costumes for my little boy and then curtains and clothing for myself. Several years ago I made some bags for friends and really enjoyed it, so Designs by Jamie began.

What inspires you?
New fabrics, a pretty doily that would look perfect on a bag. Pinterest has been an addicting inspiration where I see lots of gorgeous color combinations.

How do customers respond to your work?
I think they are pleased when they receive a bag that is uniquely theirs. Not mass produced and one of a kind.

Are you introducing any new products at Deluxe?
Zipper bags perfectly sized for your e-reader.

How would you describe your previous experience(s) at Deluxe?
I just moved to Oklahoma City last year from Idaho and heard about Deluxe, so I came last year as a customer. One of the best craft shows I have been to and I hoped that I would be able to participate this year. I feel so lucky.

What other artists are you looking forward to shopping from at Deluxe?

I’m looking forward to seeing all that is offered this year. I definitely need a new ironing board cover from Julie Sews and would love a state pillow from Marekalaine.

Anything else you’d like shoppers to know?
I’m happy to do custom orders. Just ask and we can talk fabric and style and create a great bag or accessory to fit your personality.
