Casey: I started doing polymer clay after reading tutorials on Etsy and just experimenting. Ross: I studied graphic design in college and now do it professionally.

What inspires you?
Casey: All things cute, delicious food, bright colors, and finding new uses for old things. Ross: Gig posters, Pixar, and things from my youth.

How do customers respond to your work?
People usually smile or laugh, and that’s our main goal- to make someone’s day. We like to have fun with the things we make, so there’s a lot of humor in the items in our booth.. like food with faces or a monster with a unibrow.

Are you introducing any new products at Deluxe?
Casey: I’ll be debuting some more “dressy” necklaces than ones I’ve made in the past, using findings and vintage pieces, but still incorporating some clay elements to them. Ross: I’ve got a few new poster designs in the works, and postcards.

How would you describe your previous experience(s) at Deluxe?
Our first Deluxe was last year and it was awesome! Not only did we love buying handmade gifts for our friends, family and ourselves.. but we also loved talking to customers and getting their feedback on our craft. We tell all our friends about Deluxe.. it’s the perfect place to find really cool, unique gifts. Plus, we love that they give back to the community with fundraisers.

What other artists are you looking forward to shopping from at Deluxe?
Can’t wait to see SheezKrafty, Rainbow Swirlz, Feather by Feather, among all the other artists!

Anything else you’d like shoppers to know?
You don’t want to miss this show!
We can’t wait to meet you and don’t be afraid to ask questions, tell us what you think, or just say hi.

Guest Post: Mike Thomas of Big Brothers Big Sisters

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Oklahoma is very excited to participate at Deluxe! We strive to be very visible and approachable to the community of Oklahoma City, and thanks to opportunities offered by partners like Deluxe, we are able to be in more places and touch more lives.

Big Brothers Big Sisters offers professionally supported, one-to-one mentoring relationships to children who are at-risk of negative behaviors. Children served by Big Brothers Big Sisters of Oklahoma are among the most vulnerable, often living in single parent households, growing up in poverty, or coping with parental incarceration. Big Brothers Big Sisters’ mentoring programs help these children beat the odds.

By spending consistent time with a volunteer Big Brother or Big Sister, the children in our program benefit from having extra support to handle the obstacles in their lives. Within the first year of the match 83% of Oklahoma City Littles have showed an increase in self esteem. By the second year of their match, 65% of Littles are showing improvement in their school work. The program works, and it only takes a few hours a few times a month to make a difference in a child’s life forever!

Please consider becoming a Big Brother or Big Sister, or signing your child up for a mentor. Visit our website at www.bbbsok.org. You can also follow us on facebook or twitter! We strongly encourage you to attend Deluxe and visit us at our booth to talk with a recruitment specialist about all the specifics. Thanks again to Deluxe for offering such a fun event to Oklahoma City and for caring enough to invite Big Brothers Big Sisters to participate as well!

Lovely captures of lovely light and picnics:)

Where did you learn this art or craft?
I was self taught for the most part…but really I was taught by the countryside of Oklahoma….The morning here will not let me rest until I capture its landscapes and perpetual picnics 🙂

But, I also studied at the University of Central Oklahoma in Edmond and graduated with a degree in photographic arts, with a minor in plant biology. I plan to attend there again to broaden my class variety (possibly grad school in the future)…but I will never leave my farm (Early Bird Acres)…the Gnomes and my dog Harold & my chickens and my donkey Fred and my soon-to-be horse Bert all need me….plus Ohio the milk cow does not milk herself 🙂

What inspires you?
Ooohhh goodness gracious 🙂 *The Morning *Beards *Banjos *Bluegrass *Home made pie *Laundry lines *Cottages built in trees *Meadows *Woodland creatures *Gnomes *pretty cotton dresses that spin * picnics under epic trees

How do customers respond to your work?
Wellllll…often…people tell me they want to be in my captures….which makes me happier than a peach really:) In addition, when I know that someone is buying a capture of mine that probably can only afford that piece as their luxury item for the month, it means the world and a half….times are tough and sometimes art can go right out the “I really love it, but just cannot buy it right now” window…I know that big window…Anthropologie for me right now is that window…or if i give in to that awe-inspiring store, heat turns into that window:)

In a nut shell though, If i can make someone see Oklahoma for how magical it really is, I feel complete.

Are you introducing any new products at Deluxe?
yap….some new captures mounted on cedar and a few very special ornaments…plus a new postcard design:)

Ooohhh…and T-shirts… with sam lamb catchphrases (a fundraising tool for my art show in Holland)

How would you describe your previous experience(s) at Deluxe?
AMAZING… the people i met and the customers who came out were just so much fun…I left Deluxe feeling accomplished and tired (tired because I could not stop talking:)

What other artists are you looking forward to shopping from at Deluxe?
ooooohhh goodness…I have a lot of friends who are in Deluxe…But it is good seeing my way out of towners like Audrey Eclectic…I just adore her to pieces and we have the same passion for antiques.

Anything else you’d like shoppers to know?
I want you all to know, that:
#1…you are welcome on my farm any time
#2…I would not mind it one bit if you brought me baked goods &
#3…I look forward to seeing your face on this lovely day:)

Community Profile: ProjectOKC

Each year, Deluxe chooses a local nonprofit to fundraise for at our annual event. This year, our raffles will benefit ProjectOKC. Look for more information about our raffles later this week.

What is your organization’s mission?
ProjectOKC is a group of online and offline friends committed to loving and serving Oklahoma City. We partner with non-profits, churches, schools, civic organizations and businesses to bring good to the community.

It might be a party for urban children, movie night with senior citizens, basketball with students, and even random acts of kindness. We want to network with groups and individuals alike, not caring about who gets the credit or recognition. Only caring about the families we are able to connect with.

Who is your target population?
We are focused on improving OKC so many of our volunteers and the people we serve are local. We recruit from social networks and help people in need all over the city.

What are the greatest needs you are seeing from your clients now?
We are a pretty unique non-profit, one that focuses on getting people to volunteer. In an odd way, our clients are everyday, busy people that need to get off their computers and do some GOOD! We help kids, seniors, get people plugged into the arts, and are involved in acts of kindness towards people in need.

How do you meet these needs in our community?
VERY PRACTICALLY! We give box fans to seniors in nursing homes because the home couldn’t afford the AC bill. We create birthday cards for children in foster care. We feed the homeless, clothe the poor, and support the MANY non-profits doing so much GOOD in our city. We don’t need to reinvent the wheel, reinvent services, we can assist those already doing great work by providing volunteers.

What volunteer opportunities do you have?
Almost any volunteer opportunity you can imagine, check out projectokc.com for more information.

Is there anything else you’d like shoppers to know?
We know what it’s like to be busy but still want to give our time in the community. ProjectOKC makes it easy to give just a few hours at a time while still making a measurable difference.

Artful and colorful jewelry and accessories

Where did you learn this art/craft?
My  mom taught me the basics of jewelry making a few years back on a visit for the holidays, but I wasn’t that interested in making jewelry. She loved to bead, but I just could not get into it. I just kind of stored my lessons she taught me and keep doing other art and craft.

While painting everything not nailed down in my house, I called it my funkify stage, I found a few tin decorative plaques I had in a box in the garage. They also got funkified and I loved how they looked and enjoyed trying different painting techniques on them. One day after spending some time making myself a piece of jewelry because I could not find anything fun or different at the store I remembered the tin plaques and started painting my jewelry findings.  I tried a bunch of different techniques, paint, sealants and now I think I have it down and I am hooked.

What inspires you?
Almost anything. I love nature and I take note when a bright orange leaf lands on some dark green grass. I make a mental note of the colors and if I like the combination or if I think another shade of the two would look better. Then I notice the next time I am painting a tray of pieces that I am combining the colors I just saw together.  Sometimes it is a print on a dress, or a picture in a magazine. I love to combine colors that people might not typically think of pairing together, but when they see it they know they like it.

How do customers respond to your work?
I have been so fortunate to have such loyal customers that spread the glee and tell people about my work. The most common thing I hear is that when they wear a Gleeful Peacock piece that they get stopped and asked where they got it. That really makes me one happy maker and keeps me creating!

Are you introducing any new products at Deluxe?
I plan of having limited addition Christmas Ornaments! Plus I will have some pocket watches this year that I did not have this year. They are quickly turning into one of my new favorite items!

How would you describe your previous experiences with Deluxe?
Last year was my first year and it was a fabulous show! I really enjoyed it and I am so happy to get to do it again this year!

Anything else you would like shoppers to know?
Can’t wait to see you all again! I promise some new and fun designs just for Deluxe!

Community Profile: Pirate Party of Oklahoma

At Deluxe, we have a soft spot in our hearts for the underdogs, the underrepresented, the minority. We like to give an opportunity to community groups and artists who might not find an outlet at many high-profile events. Today we’d like to introduce you to a group that will be at Deluxe collecting signatures for their petition regarding ballot access.

What is your organization’s mission?
The Pirate Party of Oklahoma is a new political party with the goal of promoting the Privacy Rights of Oklahomans, push for increased Government Transparency, advocate for Ballot Access Reform, and encourage reform of Patents, Copyrights, and Trademarks. Our goal is to embrace the ideals behind the constitution, and to make sure these ideals are honored in a time filled with technology that our founding fathers could never have imagined.

Who is your target population?
All Oklahomas concerned about their privacy and being able to use technology in a meaningful way, as well as Oklahomas who are concerned about having accountability from their government.
We don’t have a specific target population in mind, but a large portion of our membership comes from the generations that are more exposed to the constant advances in technology and are aware of the potential to use, and abuse, this technology.

What are the greatest needs you are seeing from your clients now?
A big need that we see right now is the ability for Oklahomas to actually vote for their candidate of choice, and for Oklahoma political parties to have the option to run candidates. Unless you are a member of the Democratic or Republican party, you cannot participate in primary elections or run for office as a member of your political party.
Oklahoma is considered to be the single most restrictive state in the union concerning ballot access. This is an issue that affects all Oklahomans and all small parties. Including Libertarians and Greens. Even if no member of the Pirate Party of Oklahoma ever wins an election, forcing other political parties to compete against more candidates forces them to be more responsive to the needs of the voters.

How do you meet these needs in our community?
We are currently in the process of collecting the required signatures for the State of Oklahoma to recognize the Pirate Party as an official political party in Oklahoma. We are also active with OBAR (Oklahomans for Ballot Access Reform) and are working with legislators to improve the ballot access restrictions in Oklahoma.

What volunteer opportunities do you have?
We are always welcoming people that are interested in joining the Pirate Party of Oklahoma. We will not ask anybody to drop their membership to any other political party and register as Independent. If you are concerend about the same issues as us we welcome you. Our biggest need for actual volunteers is for people that can help us collect signatures. We need at least 60,000 signatures to become recognized as a political party in Oklahoma. We have 12 months to accomplish this task and we need all the help we can get.

Is there anything else you’d like shoppers to know?
We realize that a political party may be an odd presence at the Bazaar, but we are looking forward to meeting new faces. One criticism against the Pirate Party is the accusation that we do not care about artists and are only looking to “steal” their work. In addition to collecting signatures we want to dispell that myth and are looking forward to meeting many great artists.

Warmth 4 Winter at Deluxe

Happy Thanksgiving, Deluxe fans!

As we spend time with our loved ones, let’s take some time to think about some less fortunate people. We know you care about your community, and that’s one reason you love Deluxe.

Please plan to bring some warmth to needy Oklahomans when you visit the show on December 11! We need the following items:

1. Gently used coats
2. Mittens or gloves
3. Hats and scarves
4. Blankets

We especially need children’s items and plus-sized
items, as these go rather quickly.

These items will be distributed through The Salvation Army and KFOR-TV‘s Warmth 4 Winter program.

Thank you for being a great community, we’re proud to have the most caring shoppers ever!

Vintage-inspired feathered “fascinator” headbands, clips and other accessories

Where did you learn this art or craft?
Through hours of trying to “see what would work.” It’s the process I take with most of my creating…sitting down with raw materials, placing and re-placing things in a certain order until i’m happy with the result, and then duplicating that process ad nauseam.

What inspires you?
Photography, fashion, vintage clothing and images.

How do customers respond to your work?
Pretty enthusiastically! I like it when someone comes up to my booth and says “These are lovely, but I don’t think I can pull it off.” Once they try a few on, the almost always walk away with one. It’s triumphant for me.

Are you introducing any new products at Deluxe?
Yes! I’ve started incorporating felt into a few of my headbands, and I’ll have some other accessories such as jewelry, fedoras, pins and cuffs.

How would you describe your previous experience(s) at Deluxe?
Deluxe was my very first Handmade Show experience, and is still my favorite. The unique vendors, expert planning, and easy atmosphere keep me coming back every single year. Deluxe shoppers have a keen understanding of the Handmade Revolution, and are truly appreciative of each and every vendor.

What other artists are you looking forward to shopping from at Deluxe?
Gleeful Peacock, Audrey Eclectic, Art by Bethany, Pete and Paul, and Tweet Baby Designs are some of my favorites. I’ll be certain to add to this list!

Original folk art, prints, jewelry, postcards, art dolls

Where did you learn this art or craft?
I started painting with acrylics as a kid in the garage with my mom. She was really into painting country crafts in the late 80s/early 90s. I loved going out there and ‘working’ with her. I’d paint on found objects I’d find in the neighborhood– like pieces of wood and rocks. From there a passion was born!

What inspires you?
History and fashion of bygone eras fascinate and inspire me to no end. I like to create paintings with mood— that evoke feelings. So they often look like part of a story, and literature and folk tales are other things that inspire me. Also antique photography, Americana folk art, holidays, family faith….

How do customers respond to your work?
I find that those who are sort of kindred spirits to me in a way (we like old things and things that look like they were pulled from attic trunks) are really passionate about it. Many people love to collect my work and find that it speaks to them in some way, reminds them of someone they know or a good memory. It’s a wonderful experience to watch someone fall in love with a painting.

Are you introducing any new products at Deluxe?
This year I will be introducing both new jewelry and art dolls that have never been seen at Deluxe shows past!

How would you describe your previous experience(s) at Deluxe?
I’ve been doing Deluxe since the show began! It has a great festive and family atmosphere. Everyone is welcome and there is always someone for everyone’s taste!

What other artists are you looking forward to shopping from at Deluxe?
I’m excited to see Samantha Lamb Photography, Art by Bethany and Feather by Feather. They offer such amazing products that are made with total love. Plus they are wonderful people, as are most vendors that I meet at shows like this.

Anything else you’d like shoppers to know?
I’d like shoppers to realize what great products they’re buying— handmade is a wonderful thing. You know that whatever you’re buying was made with love and something one of a kind. These things were not created by a child in an overseas factory.

And also, be prepared with your funds! Most vendors will take cash or check. Don’t be caught finding the item of your dreams and then having no way to pay for it!

And of course…have fun and get to know your vendors!
