Local leaders Vernon Deas and Steve McLean have formed Elevate Minds, a nonprofit group to provide life skills training for local youth. If you’re looking for a reason to get gussied up, why not party for a cause?
The Masquerade Ball is planned for March 5 at the Will Rogers Theater in OKC.
We can’t wait to see what Vernon and Steve accomplish for the young people of our city. We have faith that this will be a positive, powerful force!
This Saturday at IAO, join creative types for social art making, community crafting or just be inspired. Whatever you call it, this “Make It!” Day is a great opportunity to work around other creative types and cure your cabin fever.
The event is free, just RSVP on Facebook and bring your own supplies.
What are your plans for Memorial Day Weekend? Do they involve absorbing some creative energy and supporting your community? Join us in volunteering for the Paseo Arts Festival!
Register online – there’s something for everyone, even if you’re not the creative type – you can help with any of the multitude of tasks involved in putting on such a popular event. Many shifts are available, select what works best for you. The event runs May 28-30 in Oklahoma City.
Artist Names
Chris “Boom” Wiser and Rob “Dr Rock” Martin
What kind of music do you play?
Fun and Funky Music for Families
How did you start doing this?
Kids liked our “grown up” music so we put out an album just for them and booked an OKC library tour. The shows were successful and the album sold well so we decided to pursue this direction and it has been very successful.
Are you bringing anything new to Deluxe?
We have a brand new album, “Funky Fresh and Sugar Free,” that we released this year.
What inspires you?
My own personal experiences as a kid, my friend’s kids and now my new son
What is your favorite part about performing?
That it feels like a rock show every time we play!
How was your last Deluxe experience?
It was an awesome party!
Anything else you’d like to share?
We look forward to rocking Deluxe again this year, it’s such a fun, family-friendly event we feel like everyone should check it out.
As we spend time with our loved ones, let’s take some time to think about some less fortunate people. We know you care about your community, and that’s one reason you love Deluxe.
Please plan to bring some warmth to needy Oklahomans when you visit the show on December 11! We need the following items:
1. Gently used coats
2. Mittens or gloves
3. Hats and scarves
4. Blankets
We especially need children’s items and plus-sized
items, as these go rather quickly.
Do you love Deluxe? Want to meet new people and be involved with our creative community?
We need quite a few volunteers to help make Deluxe the best it can be. You can assist shoppers, help artists load up and even help kids make free art. You can volunteer with a friend, and we’ll put you on a task together if you want. Does that sound like fun? Please register here on the ProjectOKC website. We truly appreciate all of our volunteers!
There’s something going on over on NW 23rd – we noticed it when Cuppies and Joe was about to open, this time a couple years ago. These adorable bungalows were getting renovated and filling up with cool businesses.
Now, the owners of these businesses have named their district Trendy Third, and tonight is a celebration of the great things that are happening. Head over to Pippin & Pearl and MisteRabbit, and pick up some vintage goods and a little something for yourself – like one of those FriedOkra sock monkeys you’ve had your eye on! There are lots of goods from Deluxe artists inside Pippin & Pearl and Cuppies and Joe.
The Girlie Show, OKC’s annual all-female “art show with a curve” returns this weekend to entertain visitors with local and national artists, rock and roll, burlesque dancing, food from local restaurants, a cash bar and lots of shenanigans. There are many Girlie Show artists who also participate in Deluxe – in fact, your two Deluxe directors were Girlie Show artists in 2009!
This is one of the biggest parties in Oklahoma City, and it’s a show you don’t want to miss. Head to the Farmers’ Public Market and be prepared for a rowdy good time! Find ticket information here.

We’re thrilled to bring a brand new act to the Deluxe musical lineup! Skating Polly just produced their new punk/pop CD and you can check them out at Guestroom Records on November 5 for their CD release party!
We’ve seen them perform at The Conservatory in OKC and it’s hard not to smile when they’re onstage. Like all entertainment at Deluxe, their set will be family-friendly. Very catchy songs are in store for you at this show. Oh, and by the way – Peyton is 15 and Kelli is 10.
Peyton’s mom, Amber Bighorse, explains how Skating Polly has grown in the past year. “Their band really started taking off after meeting Chris Harris, founder of Nice People Records. He came to our house to show me and David some recording tricks for home recording, and we asked the girls to play some songs while we tested a mic. He was floored and immediately started helping them get their music out to the local music community.”
Skating Polly is a perfect fit for Deluxe, according to Bighorse. “They do all their own art – poster designs, lyric cards, t-shirts. They are pretty ‘do-it-yourself’ in every sense. All the music on their first release was primarily recorded at home.”
The CD will be available at Deluxe, so come meet the band and enjoy their show. Check out their cover of MIA’s “Paper Planes.”
